Make things out of lolly sticks
You could collect lots of lolly sticks or you could buy some from a good art, crafts or a all sorts shop. Then use any sort of glue to stick them together in any way to make cool patterns or good boxes.
A base can be made to start with by laying out two lolly sticks one lolly stick apart and gluing lolly sticks across from one to the other, close together, to make something like a square beer mat or mat for under a cup (coaster). Lolly sticks can then be glued around the edge and then more glued on top of each other to make a wall and eventually a box. From then on use your imagination to make containers with lids, boxes, ornamental flower boxes and so on.
These of course can be painted or decorated with felt tips. Don't forget to put newspaper down first.
Glue can be PVA wood glue - the white glue you use at school - or some of that glue that comes in tubes but we prefer PVA. Buy it in a big container from a DIY shop if possible it's much cheaper that way.
For older children an electric glue gun is a good investment - from most craft or W.H. Smith type shops. The children use them at school. They consist of a small low voltage electric gun/applicator which dispenses glue from solid glue sticks about 4 inches long. The glue comes out slowly in a thread but is hot as it comes out and so not suitable for the under eight's.
