Pop Up Cards
As any adult will tell you, it's a whole lot nicer to receive a home-made card than one which has been bought. And if it's been designed and drawn by you too, then that's even better than a computer-produced one, though these are fun to do as well.
A pop-up card is just that little bit different and quite simple to make.
You will need-
Strong card (plain is best, but cereal packets or something similar will be O.K)
Thinner card or thick paper
Crayons or felt tips and a pencil
Something glittery-shiny paper or a tube of glitter
Glue for paper/card
1 Start by making the outside- just fold a piece of card in half.
2 To make the pop-up bit inside, take slightly thinner card or thick paper and cut a piece about the same size as the outside card when it's opened out flat.
3 Now fold this piece of card/paper in half to make another card shape the same as the outside one. Now fold the free end back in half to meet at the centre. Do this with both sides so that when you stand it up it is like a concertina or a letter `W'. The middle of the `W' is the bit that will pop out.
4 Keep the paper folded, and if you want it to be shorter than the outside card, cut a bit off the top. Now draw what you want to pop out on the paper, still folded in four. It is very important to draw the figure right to the edge of the paper, because you are going to cut round it, but you have to leave some bits joined or of course you will end up with four separate pieces of paper. Try it on a spare piece first.
5 With the paper folded in four, draw one figure or object and making sure it is joined at at least two places to the piece next to it, cut it out. Angels can be linked at the head and round the bottom of their dress, people can link hands and feet, and trees can be joined at the ends of the branches. Unfold and colour the picture in, using glitter or shiny paper as well.
6 When you have finished, draw a picture on the front of the card to match the one inside- a snow scene if you're drawing snowmen, a sleigh if you have drawn reindeer, and so on. You can also write HAPPY BIRTHDAY or something similar to suit.
7 To fit the centre bit in, place it with the design towards you in the middle of the card, with the edges about a centimetre from the edge of the card- it pops up better this way. If you have drawn the picture on the `wrong side' of the thin card, don't worry, just go over the folds again so they go the other way.
8 Glue the central piece in and don't forget to write who it's from- you could use the back of the card for this if you don't have space inside.
