Make a wormery
You can catch worms and put them in a big jar or tub with some soil and some leaves on top-watch what happens to them. Your child can watch the worms grow or reproduce (have babies). Your child will love it and it will be good for his/her education. Remember always put animals back in the place where you found them.
If you have layers of different coloured soil, (some from the compost heap for example) you will see what happens to them when the worms get busy. Always keep the wormery moist but not wet. If you think they have disappeared, they may have curled into a ball. Let them go after a few weeks as they will have run out of food. A large sweet jar made of glass or plastic makes a super wormery.
You can keep other small creatures but mums don't usually mind worms too much. They can't get out and don't smell or anything. Mums probably won't like slugs for example.
